A Brief History

Established in 1908, UBC is British Columbia’s oldest university. Since 1915, our motto, Tuum Est (It is Yours), has been a declaration of our commitment to attracting and supporting those who have the drive to shape a better world.

We offer our more than 60,000 undergraduate and graduate students an unrivalled choice of degree programs at our two campuses and affiliated teaching hospitals.UBC’s Okanagan campus has nine Faculties and Schools, each offering a range of academic programs, whilst the main campus at Vancouver provides over 20 deparments.


Six popular courses

Electrical Engineering

As a student in UBC’s Electrical Engineering program, you will learn essential skills in electronics, circuit analysis and electromagnetics, and can choose to focus on anything from the electronic properties of microscopic devices and newly discovered materials to the generation and distribution of power in international electric power grids.

International Relations

Students will complete prerequisites during your first two years of study and apply for admission to the program at the end of their second year. As an International Relations major, students have many opportunities to study abroad, for example, spend a semester on exchange or complete their fourth year seminar requirement with a Global Seminar or an International Service Learning experience.


The UBC Faculty of Medicine offers the only medical school in British Columbia and was the first university in North America to distribute its MD undergraduate program. The four-year MD Undergraduate Program is designed to prepare students for postgraduate residency training by providing a foundation for socially responsible practice, lifelong learning and excellent medical care.


The Vancouver School of Economics at UBC is ranked top in Canada, and in the top 20 such departments in the world. The programs offer the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the economy and examine the social, cross-cultural and ethical dimensions of economic decision-making. Students learn from some of the world’s leading experts in a wide variety of fields, including industrial organization, macro-economics, political economy, international trade and finance development.

Computer Science

The UBC Department of Computer Science is an internationally-renowned department. The department is rated in the top 25 of its kind in the world, and we place consistently in the top 3 computer science departments across Canada.UBC sits at the forefront of the artificial intelligence and machine learning revolution, the explosion of data science, the acceleration of human-computer interaction, and Computer Systems Research.


UBC's diverse and innovative curriculum offers a first rate legal education that balances traditional areas of practice with emerging fields of specialization.
