A Brief History

University of Toronto was founded by royal charter in 1827 as King’s College, the first institution of higher learning in Upper Canada. Originally controlled by the Church of England, the university assumed its present name in 1850 upon becoming a secular institution. As a collegiate university, it comprises eleven colleges and two satellite campuses located in Scarborough and Mississauga.

General Information

The university’s academic programs are organized into faculties and divisions. Our departments, colleges, and centres and institutes provide further support for study and research into focused area. This includes 18 learning units from Applied Science and Engineering, Art & Science, Medicine, Law, to Social Work.

Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering program includes four years of coursework. The first two years of the program provide students with a broad understanding of the discipline. In the third and fourth years, students are able to tailor their program to their interests and preferred areas of study. During their final year of study, students take part in the Capstone design program, pairing with industry and community clients to address real-world challenges.

Sociology

The Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto is consistently the top-ranked sociology department in Canada and one of the top in the world. The school provides internationally-renowned scholars with excellent track records for securing research funding, producing outstanding sociological research, and extensively mentoring our graduate students. U of T's core specialization areas are: Sociology of Crime and Law; Culture; Gender; Health and Mental Health; Immigration, Race and Ethnicity;etc.

Psychology

Measured by major global university rankings, research productivity and impact, the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto is one of the world’s best.The Psychology Department also enjoys strong co-operative relationships with a number of affiliated organizations.

Commerce & Management

Sstudents will benefit from an innovative and integrative curriculum that presents a global perspective for an enriched professional undergraduate experience. Students will take career-oriented courses in management and applied economics as well as a wide selection of courses in the arts and sciences. After first year, students can choose to specialize in accounting, finance and economics or management.

Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto has 8 undergraduate units which offer world-class education and research programs of study in a wide range of research areas such as Dept. of Surgery, Biochemistry, Immunology, etc Our students get to learn in dynamic settings that present real-world situations and gain a deep understanding of science and medical practice, but also of their social and ethical responsibilities.

Architecture

The University of Toronto's provides interdisciplinary training and research in architecture, art, and their allied practices. Architectural Studies begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of the field through design, history, and technology/computation. Following the first two years of study, students have the option of further focusing their degree by electing to pursue one of three streams: Design or History & Theory or Technology.
