A Brief History

McGill University is a public research university located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Founded in 1821 by royal charter granted by King George IV, the university bears the name of James McGill. McGill’s main campus is on the slope of Mount Royal in downtown Montreal, with a second campus situated in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, also on Montreal Island.

McGill offers degrees and diplomas in over 300 fields of study, with the highest average entering grades of any Canadian university. Most students are enrolled in the five largest faculties, namely Arts, Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Management.

Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering offers degrees in Bioengineering, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, Materials Co-op, and Mining Co-op. The Faculty also offers a Bachelor of Software Engineering and a Bachelor of Science (Architecture) degree. Through a challenging curriculum, students in the McGill Faculty of Engineering acquire a strong foundation in science and technology and develop valuable interpersonal and teamwork skills.All programs provide a strong background in math, basic sciences, engineering science, design and complementary studies.

Economics

The department provides a high quality of education at all levels, with undergraduate Minor, Major and Honours degree programs Beyond knowledge of economic theory per se, the training that McGill offers in Economics also embodies mathematical and statistical skills, institutional and historical knowledge, and more general analytical and reasoning skills.

Investment Management

The Investment Management Program at the Desautels Faculty of Management, is designed in consultation with a world-leading team of investment managers. Political Science

The department offers exciting opportunities for undergraduate and graduate education. The professors are dynamic teachers and internationally-known scholars. There are many opportunities to do joint and interdisciplinary programs as well that allow students to combine their interest in political science with coursework in other disciplines.

Medicine

The curriculum prepares students for careers as key members of the medical community, whether in clinical practice, in medical education, in research or as leaders of the health care system. The four-year MDCM Program helps our students understand the interactions between science, patients and themselves.

Linguistics

The focus of research and teaching in the Department of Linguistics at McGill University is on theoretical and experimental linguistics, with special emphasis on the understanding of language diversity and how this diversity may be related to a universal underlying linguistic competence. The department places a strong emphasis on methodology, with specialists in experimental, computational, and fieldwork methodologies.
